2016 Lexus RC F
[F]un and [F]ast
Last year, Lexus decided it needed a model capable of taking on the BMW M4 and the Cadillac ATS-V, so it turned to its F line to get the job done. Fast forward one year and we're happy to report that it's 'Mission Accomplished' for the Lexus RC F. The 2016 Lexus RC F is unlike anything you've experienced from a Lexus badged vehicle. Sure, it features the same outstanding build quality Lexus is famous for, but it ratchets up the performance, attitude, and agrression to 11 and never looks back. You’ll never look at Lexus the same way again.
Performance
Hold onto your hats because the 2016 Lexus RC F is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 generating 467 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque. As you can imagine, that’s more than enough to send the RC F barreling down a straightaway or – when reality demands – up to highway speeds.
Of course a high-powered engine is nothing without an equally impressive transmission, and thankfully the RC F sports both. In addition to its 5.0-liter V8, the RC F employs a performance-oriented eight-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the rear wheels. This particular setup is remarkably refined, and exhibits smooth upshifts and rev-matched downshifts that react on-demand.
While the RC F’s responsive transmission is a joy to experience, another high note is the vehicle’s adaptive variable suspension. This system monitors and adjusts the shock absorber setting at each wheel, helping to reduce body lean as you enter and exit turns. While that may sound a bit technical, let us assure you that all that technical jargon translates to a vehicle that devours corners and handles with laser-like precision.
Despite its raw power and sharp handling, the RC F also returns impressive fuel economy—earning an EPA-estimate 19 mpg combined (16 city/25 highway).*
Features
The 2016 Lexus RC F is available in one solitary trim and starts at $62,805.**
Standard equipment includes 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, high-performance Brembo brakes, LED headlights, keyless ignition and entry, heated front seats, and simulated leather upholstery.
Don’t let its aggressive exterior fool you, though, as the 2016 RC F packs a veritable arsenal of standard technology. Highlights include a standard rearview camera, Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity, a 7-inch display, a configurable multi-instrument display, voice commands and a 10-speaker sound system—complete with satellite radio, HD Radio®, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB interface.
The RC F also comes standard with Lexus Enform Remote, which allows you to remotely lock or unlock the doors, start and stop the car, turn the climate control on or off, find the vehicle and obtain vehicle status reports all from your smartphone.
If you wish to add to the RC F’s already comprehensive list of standard features you can do so via several option packages. There is a Premium package, which includes an active rear spoiler, heated and ventilated front seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, automatic wipers, auto-dimming side mirrors and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. A Performance package features a carbon-fiber roof and a rear spoiler, as well as a torque-vectoring differential, and an All-Weather package includes a windshield de-icer, headlight washers and a heated steering wheel.
Design
The 2016 RC 350 coupe is arguably one of the most stunning Lexus models of the modern era, and that dramatic design is emphasized even further on the RC F. While Lexus has established a reputation for more conservative designs, the RC F well and truly throws caution to the wind.
Up front, the exterior sports prominent curves, sharp angles, and muscular bulges. Along with a raised hood (which accommodates its V8 engine) the RC F sports an even bigger, more aggressive signature spindle grille and a flurry of fins on the sides.
The styling flourishes continue around back, where the 2016 RC F boasts quad outlets and rear trunk badge.
Step inside and it’s immediately evident that the RC F was penned with drivers in mind. The seats are snug and bolstered and help keep you comfortable on longer stretches of road, and in place during aggressive cornering.
Naturally, material quality is high, and the RC F features a tiered dash design with audio and climate controls that are steeply angled, reinforcing the RC F's sporty vibe.
Safety
Pure performance and seductive design may garner all the attention, but the 2016 Lexus RC F also boasts some serious safety features. Standard equipment includes antilock disc brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, front seat side airbags, front knee airbags and side curtain airbags. Also standard is Lexus Enform Safety Connect, an onboard emergency telematics system that incorporates collision notification, a stolen vehicle locator and roadside assistance.
If that’s not enough, further safety enhancements can be added such as blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control option, and a collision mitigation system.
Bottom Line
The 2016 Lexus RC F is one fine and fun vehicle to drive. It features all the refinement and quality you expect from a Lexus, but ramps up the attitude and performance in a big way, thanks to an aggressive interior, driver-focused interior, and adaptive suspension. This is a new path for Lexus to tread, one where luxury, quality, and performance can walk hand-in-hand. And you’ll absolutely love it.
