2016 Mitsubishi I-MIEV

New for 2016

The 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV returns after a one year hiatus, bringing with it an optional navigation package that includes Bluetooth®, a rearview camera, and steering-wheel mounted audio controls.

A Shockingly Good EV

Electric vehicles (EVs) are still a relatively new phenomenon. And while they’ve yet to draw mass appeal, that doesn’t mean people aren’t attracted to their qualities. The 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a special type of EV. Not only is it the most affordable pure EV around, with an MSRP of $22,995, it’s also incredibly nimble, and can fit into spaces few other cars can.*

Powertrains and Performance

The 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a rear-wheel drive EV that is powered by a 49-kilowatt electric motor and fed by a 16-kWh-lithium-ion battery. Total power output is rated at 66 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque.

The i-MiEV features three selectable driving modes: “D,” which draws full power from the motor; “Eco,” which limits power output to maximize fuel economy; and “B,” which increases the sensitivity of the regenerative braking system.

The i-MiEV ‘s regenerative braking system is a particularly interesting feature because it recaptures the kinetic energy created during braking to help power and recharge the battery. That almost makes it so you can operate the i-MiEV with one foot, since letting off the accelerator causes the regenerative braking to kick in, slowing the i-MiEV down.

In terms of range, the EPA estimates that the 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV can travel roughly 62 miles on a single charge of its battery.** The EPA has also awarded the i-MiEV an energy consumption estimate of 30 kWh per 100 miles, which is on par with competitors like the Nissan LEAF.**

Because the i-MiEV is powered exclusively by electricity, you can pretty much wave goodbye to the gas station. Once the i-MiEV’s battery depletes, you’ll need to recharge in much the same way you would a mobile phone.

Plugged into a 120-volt household outlet, the i-MiEV takes about 14-22 hours to charge. That time can be greatly reduced by using an SAE Level 2 (240-volt) charging station, cutting the charge time to roughly 7 hours.

If you’re really short on time, and have access to one, a Level 3 charged will restore the i-MiEV to 80 percent of a full charge in a mere 30 minutes. Be sure to check your area for availability.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Mitsubishi i-MIEV proves that you don’t have to bleed your bank account dry for bleeding-edge technology.

Despite a starting MSRP of $22,995,* the 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV includes a veritable treasure trove of standard features. This includes 15-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, heated side mirrors, full power accessories, air-conditioning, and even heated front seats. The i-MiEV also features 50/50-split folding rear seats for added convenience, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob that add a dash of refinement to the comfortable cabin. There’s also a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and auxiliary audio jack.

As previously mentioned, the 2016 i-MiEV is now available with an optional Navigation package that adds a seven-inch touchscreen, navigation (surprise!), a rearview camera, and Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity. Steering-wheel audio controls and a USB port are also included.

The i-MiEV also offers a number of standalone options, including rear parking sensors, blue LED interior lighting, and a cargo net to help keep items safe and secure.

Design

Let’s not beat around the bush (or EV for that matter): the 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV has what can only be described as a unique look. It’s a cheerful and fun design that, while slightly cartoonish, compliments the vehicle perfectly, and will manage to turn heads for all the right reasons.

We’ve already talked about the i-MiEV’s small stature, but for some added perspective, at 144.7 inches, i-MiEV is shorter than a Mini Cooper Hardtop but longer than a Fiat 500.

The exterior may be a bit more eccentric but step inside the i-MiEV and you’ll find a much more subdued and straightforward design. While some EVs like to accentuate their electric powertrains, the i-MiEV takes a more functional and direct approach.

Nevertheless, the interior is comfortable, and its bubble-like design provides ample headroom for taller occupants. At the back, the i-MiEV offers up 13.2 cubic feet of space behind the backseat, which is just enough for a set of golf clubs or even a standard sized suitcase. With the rear seats folded, however, the i-MiEV’s cargo capacity expands to an impressive 50.4 cubic feet.

Safety

It may be small, but the 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV is big on safety. Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes (front disc, rear drum), stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. It also features an "Approaching Vehicle Audible System" (AVAS), which alerts pedestrians that the i-MiEV is nearby by emitting a sound at low speeds. As mentioned in the “Features and Trims” section, Rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are optional.

Bottom Line

Do you find yourself frequently fighting for parking space? Are your commutes relatively short? If you answered yes to any of the previous questions, or if you’re on the electric fence about purchasing an EV, the 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV is the perfect induction to a gasoline-free driving experience.
