2016 Mitsubishi Lancer
New for 2016
The 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer is an exciting upgrade to the classic model. Going into its ninth model year, this reliable compact sedan is the oldest in the segment. This version features more grown-up looks and updated interior aspects that give it more style and flair. It's a car with universal appeal that has stood up to the test of time.
Feature-Packed
The Lancer has been a popular compact sedan for nearly 10 years now, and Mitsubishi worked hard to ensure the 2016 model packs in even better value and a sportier feel. This year's Lancer features a more sophisticated front-end design and new technology that helps give it a more refined performance.
Upgrades to packaging and interior space are impressive, and even the base model showcases some fancy new additions, including new wheels, A/C and more. The SEL trim level has even more new features.
Performance
The 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer features a number of different mixes and matches with the two engines, two transmissions and the choice between front and all-wheel drive. The base model is powered by a 148-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with either a standard five-speed manual gearbox or an optional CVT. This version gets 30 mpg combined when paired to the CVT,* and 28 mpg combined with the manual.*
The next level up is the 2.4L AWC with a 168-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. This version offers All-Wheel Control that is used in SUVs as well. This powertrain is used for the SE and SEL models, too, and is great for driving in city traffic or on the highway. It offers just the right amount of power and torque to move the compact sedan in even tough driving conditions, like uphill highways.
The engine remains efficient and the front-drive ES can muster 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway when paired to the manual transmission.* The CVT improves the fuel economy by a few miles on the 2.0-liter while the front-drive estimates rise a bit. The manual makes for a smoother ride and lowers the noise level, too, which is great for drivers who are spending a lot of time in the car.
You can expect this car to handle swiftly on highways and in tight spaces – its diminutive frame makes for a great car in and around the city. Needless to say, parallel parking and tight corners will be a breeze.
Features
The Lancer is definitely a sportier drive than most small compact cars, but drivers looking for a sleeker version can opt for the Lancer GT, which offers larger brakes, a sportier suspension tune, 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler and a sunroof. Mitsubishi dispensed with the Ralliart model and now every model gets a new center console. Prices for the Lancer start at $17,595.**
The ES and the SE models have updated seat fabrics to choose from and every model is available in automatic versions. The new CVT was engineered to help reduce noise levels while improving the driving performance of the car. Every Lancer comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, A/C, LED daytime running lights, fog lights, voice-activated audio and cellphone controls, and heated power mirrors with turn indicators to upgrade the driving experience.
The Sun & Sound package on the ES includes a gorgeous power glass sunroof, a rear-view camera, 6.1-inch display audio system, HD and satellite radio and a 710-watt Rockford Fosgate® premium sound system with nine speakers, giving this version a super-premium feel.
Design
The 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer retains the same classic style it’s known for with a few key updates. It’s a straightforward and attractive compact four-door with clean edges and a professional image. The revised front end now has a small grille above the bumper to give it a more sophisticated, subdued look.
Inside, you’ll find a new center console and a highly upgraded audio display system along with new seat fabrics and shiny black trim to freshen up the look. Depending on the trim, the interior has some soft-touch surfaces and different degrees of matte-metallic finishes. The result is an elegantly simple and classic compact sedan.
Safety
This car holds up well in safety ratings and the easy handling and performance helps drivers avoid accidents with sudden emergency turns and brakes. It comes with five airbags, ABS brake system, traction control, child safety rear door locks, stability control, side impact beams and low tire pressure warning in order to provide the safest ride possible. When it comes to safety, Mitsubishi generally ranks quite high and the ratings for the Lancer are no exception.
Verdict
Overall, the 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer is a reliable, handsome, and affordable compact sedan that gives its competitors a run for the money. It’s the perfect choice for a pleasant and calm driving experience in a solid, well-performing car that’s great for both city and long-distance driving.
