2016 Toyota Avalon

New for 2016

For the first time since 2013, the Toyota Avalon unveils a midcycle refresh. With older models of the Avalon standing up well against other vehicles in the class like the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger or Chevrolet Impala, this new version has big shoes to fill.

Combining Performance and Economy

Toyota has long been a brand synonymous with affordable, long-lasting vehicles, and the latest version of the Avalon is no different. It continues with the modest price tag common to Toyotas with an updated exterior that gives it a more athletic profile.

The result of new styling and performance choices is a mid-sized sedan that doesn't turn driving into a chore.

Powertrain and Performance

Powered by a DOHC 24 valve 3.5-litre V6 engine, the Avalon offers some impressive stats for a commuter car. With 268 hp and 248 lb.-ft. of torque, this sedan moves quickly and cleanly.

The Avalon has always offered a V6 engine, and even the hybrid option delivers with a 16-valve 2.5 liter Atkinson-cycle inline-4 engine combined with a permanent magnet synchronous AC electric motor to deliver a total horsepower of 200 and 199 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel economy is where Toyotas typically shine, and the Avalon is no exception. The V6 engine offers an estimated 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.* The hybrid takes that to the next level with an outstanding 40 mpg city and 39 mpg highway.*

The 2016 Avalon model combines a fully independent suspension with a stabilizer bar to give drivers a smooth and comfortable ride on virtually any road surface.

Under the chassis, diffuser panels help reduce turbulence and wind noise, making the drive in an Avalon quiet and comfortable.

Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters come standard on every trim for the 2016 model, giving drivers a more hands-on experience. Control each shift for a responsive performance on the road.

Electric power steering with two settings gives drivers the option for more control. The normal mode works fine for everyday driving, while the sport mode tunes everything to handle twists and turns.

Features and Trims

Base model packages on the Avalon start at a MSRP $32,650,** with plenty of room for upgrades. With five different V6 trim levels and two levels available for the hybrid model, buyers can customize the features for a new car.

Convenience comes standard with Toyotas, so it is no surprise that the Avalon includes the Smart Key System with Push Button Start, Entune™ Audio Plus with Connected Navigation and an integrated backup camera.

Cruise in comfort on heated leather seats with warm ambient lighting. The Entune™ Premium JBL® Audio System that includes eleven speakers scattered in nine different locations enables crisp, clear audio for navigation, communication and entertainment.

Other standard equipment for the Avalon includes Intelligent Touch controls for climate and entertainment and wireless smartphone charging. The Avalon is practically an office on the move!

Optional upgrades take this economically priced sedan option into the realm of luxury with features like 18-inch painted alloy wheels, leather interior and driving modes that include a sport option for a livelier feel behind the wheel.

Design

The design of the 2016 is where it really takes a turn from prior models, with updates to the exterior from bumper to bumper.

More athletic lines start with the swooping roof line and more flared out rear fenders. The front takes a more aggressive stance with a larger grille and slim running lights. The updated appearance doesn't sacrifice on power, with this full size sedan going from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds in the V6 model.

The hybrid version also offers a surprising acceleration, going 0 to 60 mph in a conservative 8.2 seconds.

Inside the redesigned Avalon, the more athletic exterior did come with a slight reduction of interior space and a host of technology upgrades.

A premium wood grain dash adds elegance while the upgraded technology package puts the Entune™ Premium Audio with Navigation system front and center.

Depending on the trim, leather steering wheels make for easy gripping on tight turns. The updated suspension system offers more responsive driving, and the LED tail lights give it a whole new look from the rear.

The Toyota Avalon seamlessly combines performance, price and convenience -- exactly what Toyota is best known for.

Safety

Standard safety features in all trim levels starts with the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection that helps avoid road hazards. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control helps automatically adjust to surrounding traffic conditions, and anti-lock brakes come in when you need to stop suddenly. In the event of an accident, the Start Safety System™ and 10 air bags installed help prevent injuries. On the premium trims, Blind Spot Monitoring reduces one more risk factor.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Toyota Avalon upgrades an existing model to include a range of added features and a more responsive driving experience than ever. Several small changes give it an updated and sleeker look with more personality, wrapped in a package that preserves fuel economy.
