2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

SCHEDULE TEST DRIVE

Overview

Redesigned for the 2016 model year, the latest Mitsubishi Outlander Sport brings serious style to an already impressive vehicle. Chrome accents and the double grille give it an attractive look, while the same performance under the hood keeps this SUV running alongside its competitors.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport comes in four trim levels: ES, SE, SEL, and GT. The entry-level version starts at $19,795.* The base model comes handsomely equipped for the price with halogen headlights, rear LED lights, side fender turn-signal indicators and heated side-view mirrors, cruise control, cargo tie-down utility hooks, Bluetooth® compatibility, and a color multi-information display inside.

Optional features include rain-sensing windshield wipers, a 6.1-inch touchscreen audio display, digital HD Radio®, SiriusXM®, and a rearview camera system.

The Perfect Ride for…

Budget-minded buyers looking for a small yet surprisingly capable SUV at a great price. The 2017 Outlander Sport offers a comfortable experience for the driver and passengers. Even at the lower trim level, the interior materials look more expensive than they really are—a testament to the design team's ability to create a pleasant interior while staying under budget. With convenient features such as Bluetooth® phone pairing, it’s easy to recommend the Outlander Sport for intrepid road-trippers or first-time family buyers.

Drive & Handling

Buyers can choose either a 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter MIVEC DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine. The 2.0-liter option provides 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.4-liter is a little more powerful, with 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive comes standard, while All-Wheel Control is optional.

Since the 2.4-liter version offers more horsepower, drivers can expect it to give them a peppy ride. It's surprisingly quick for crossover SUV, even for one that's relatively small like the Outlander Sport. The 2.0-liter option, of course, isn't as quick, but it still gives drivers plenty of speed to keep them safe when merging on interstates and avoiding risky scenarios.

A five-speed manual transmission comes standard with both versions, while a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is also available. The five-speed is a good option for buyers who like something to do while driving. The CVT, however, is a more convenient option for drivers who don't want to bother with switching gears in heavy traffic.

When it comes to fuel economy, both engines offer similar numbers. Drivers who choose the 2.0-liter engine can expect to get 23 mpg city/29 mpg highway with the manual and 24 mpg city/30 mpg highway with the automatic for front-wheel-drive models.** The all-wheel-drive 2.0-liter Outlander Sport with automatic gets the same city/highway mpg as the base model. Models with the 2.4-liter engine get 23 mpg city/28 mpg highway with front-wheel drive and 22 mpg city/27 mpg highway with all-wheel drive.**

Key Features

Versatile Capability

Despite its pint-sized profile, the Outlander Sport is spacious where it counts. Stow the convenient 60/40 rear fold-flat seats and enjoy up to 49.5 cubic feet of cargo area. Add the optional roof racks and you’ll have no trouble getting your gear to your next adventure.

Automatic Climate Control

Climate control can make or break a road trip. Luckily, the Outlander Sport comes standard with an advanced system that automatically adjusts fan speed, air source, and temperature for the ultimate in comfort. The intuitively designed dials put you in control of your cabin experience.

Alternative Options

The larger 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander offers even more convenience. This seven-passenger SUV may not be the obvious choice, but it's certainly a smart one. That's because the Outlander boasts real off-road chops, a feature-rich cabin, and—like every Mitsubishi—one heckuva warranty. For 2017, the Outlander gets a number of upgrades that make it an even more compelling choice. The previously optional 6.1-inch touchscreen and rearview camera are now standard, and the 2017 Outlander is now available with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™. Other new additions to its feature list include automatic high beams, a 360-degree camera system, and heated steering wheel.
