2018 Hyundai Elantra
What's New?
Following last year's redesign, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra receives a few minor changes this year, including a new trim level and several newly standard features. The SEL trim slots nicely above the base SE, replacing the Popular package that was available on the 2017 SE. The SEL also has a number of standard features that, until now, weren't available on the base model, which include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist.
Overview
Even a decade ago, buying a compact car meant settling for a Spartan economy model, especially if said compact car was a Hyundai. But now compact cars have the same styling, technology, and features of larger models, and Hyundai is about more than merely affordable transportation. The 2018 Hyundai Elantra shows just how far both the segment and Hyundai itself have come.
The Perfect Ride for...
Drivers looking for a compact car with modern exterior styling that extends to a clean interior. The polished 2018 Elantra rivals any of the competition's offerings, and its attractive looks, fuel efficiency, and plentiful options make it a high-value choice. Apart from the base SE, every Elantra has a fantastic infotainment system that's compatible with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™. There are a host of other optional features available as well, which only bolsters the claim that the Elantra is an agreeable compact with its sights set on the top of its class.
Drive & Handling
Hyundai offers three different powertrain options on the new Elantra, each emphasizing efficiency without sacrificing fun.
Standard equipment on the SE, SEL, Value Edition, and Limited is a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, while its ECO model uses a 1.4-liter turbocharged GDI to produce 128 horsepower. Equipped with a standard 4-cylinder engine, the SE trim receives an estimated 29 city/38 hwy mpg* fuel economy, and the SEL and Value Edition both earn 29 city/37 hwy mpg.* If you prefer a more controlled, zippy driving experience, you should opt for the Sport model. It receives a 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI 4-cylinder that delivers 201 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 22 city/30 hwy.*
Per last year's update, all 2018 Elantra models are also equipped with the Drive Mode Select feature, which allows drivers to choose from Eco, Normal, or Sport models with the push of a button. Each alters the car's character for its respective type of driving.

As technology has advanced, more and more cars are receiving advanced driver-assistance features to make life easier and safer. That can be said for the new 2018 Elantra. Packed with nearly all of the latest active safety and driver-assistance features, the Elantra scored well in crash-test ratings (even earning a 2017 IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" when equipped with optional Automatic Emergency Braking and Dynamic Bending Lights).** Its top-tiered trim, the Limited, (which comes with automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning), received a perfect score. Whatever model you choose, you can be assured that you're receiving the latest in safety and driver-assistance technologies, including blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, and much more.
Alternative Options
In addition to the new Elantra, Hyundai boasts a number of other options to meet different price points and driving needs. Hyundai's 2018 Sonata is a great option for drivers looking for a full-size sedan. Longer with a wider stance, the Sonata is an amalgamation of style, comfort, and utility. If you're looking a something a little different, atypical even, you should take a look at the new Hyundai Kona, which offers the road manners of a coupe without sacrificing the space and utility.
*EPA estimates. Your mileage will vary and depends on several factors, including your driving habits and vehicle condition.
**2017 IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" based on good ratings in the moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, no less than an advanced rating for front crash prevention, and no less than an acceptable headlight rating. For details visit www.iihs.org.
