Signs Your Vehicle Needs Power Steering Service

Your power steering system is one of the most vital components of your vehicle. Without it, your steering would feel very heavy and it would be difficult to drive your car. This system is simple and rarely needs maintenance. However, there are some signs that your power steering needs attention and you should never ignore the warning signs of failing power steering.

Until recently, most vehicles relied on a power steering pump and reservoir to supply high-pressure fluid to the steering rack. Many vehicles still use this system but as the automotive industry evolves, some new cars are using an electric motor to make your steering rack easy to turn. Most of the cars on the road today do still use a hydraulic system to lighten your steering. For these vehicles, it’s important to inspect the power steering regularly for issues.

Leaking

One of the most common issues with power steering systems is leaking. Since the plumbing uses a combination are hard and soft lines, it’s easy for clamps and soft hoses to leak over time. With age, those hoses can even begin to weep. Leaks not only make a mess in the engine bay, but they also can introduce air into the system which can cause further issues. If you notice your fluid level is low or your car is leaving power steering fluid on the driveway, it’s a good idea to have any leaks resolved so it doesn’t damage your pump or steering rack, which can be expensive costs.

Discolored Fluid

Over time, the fluid in the system is heated and cooled over and over. When this happens, the fluid can break down and be less effective. The specially formulated fluid protects the pump, rack, seals, and lines in the system. As it breaks down, it may do more damage than good by causing the seals within the power steering pump or rack to degrade. It’s important to have the fluid flushed regularly, or any time you notice discoloration.

Difficulty Steering

If your steering becomes suddenly heavy and difficult to turn, this could be a sign of a serious failure. Your power steering pump and steering rack could fail. Leaks and old fluid can contribute to these failures, so always make sure your system has fresh fluid, filled at the appropriate level.

Whining noises

Sometimes your power steering pump can make whining sounds, especially when turning the wheel. This is a sign that your power steering pump is failing. The whining sound could be because there is air in the system or simply because the pump is no longer functioning properly. Either way, you shouldn’t ignore this. While the steering might not feel noticeably different, failure is imminent and could leave you with a car that’s dangerous to drive.
