At MotorWorld | MileOne Autogroup, we’re always intrigued by talk of new models joining the already stellar Mercedes-Benz lineup. The latest scuttlebutt comes by way of the Detroit Bureau, which reports that the German luxury brand may bring its A-Class compact hatchback to the U.S. in 2017.
The A-Class would likely serve as an entry-level model to the Mercedes-Benz family of vehicles, sitting below the CLA-Class four-door coupe. The A-Class has been a resounding sales success in Europe, and Mercedes believes that success and popularity could translate stateside.
In addition to the standard A-Class, Mercedes-Benz offers a performance variant in the form of the A45 AMG®. This particular model would “compete” against a number of “hot hatch” contenders such as the Ford Focus RS, Volkswagen Golf R400, Audi S3, and Honda Type R. Although it goes without saying that none of the above offer the same level of refinement and performance Mercedes-Benz is famous for.
The European-only Mercedes-Benz A-Class is available with a number of different powertrains: the A160 is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine; the A180d is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder diesel; the A220d utilizes a 2.0-liter diesel; the A250 uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine; and finally, sitting at the top of the range is the aforementioned A45 AMG®, which makes 375 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine.
Although nothing has been confirmed by Mercedes-Benz, it’s always fun to speculate and see what models are on the horizon.
